For this commission, I was reflecting on Layla Saad's practice of asking, "What does it mean to become a good ancestor?" What does it look like to show up in love for one another when we're physically separated by rivers, valleys, mountains, oceans, skies, and lifetimes? What lineages of love and care are holding us today? I thought about how the moon pulls the tide, songs our ancestors sang and danced to, seeds planted, and ecosystems working together to hold life in balance.
The actions we take with love today will be felt for generations after us, not individually recognized, but as a part of collective movements towards a brighter future, voting being one act of many leading to this.
